Filmmaking Tips

Informal and Unofficial List of Filmmaking Tips, Tricks, and Techniques, That I Have Collected Over The Years

Through my experience as a Director of Photography and filmmaker, I have collected some tips that might help you on your next project  At some point I will get this organized, but for now, it is what it is. Enjoy!

1.  24 FPS, 1/50 sec. shutter, manual WB.

2.  Check your settings from shot to shot; sometimes things get bumped and settings change.

3.  Use a neutral color profile, or better yet load a cinegamma for maximum dynamic range

4.  Slow down, when composing shots.  Think about what you want to achieve with them.

5.  Try different angles: low, high, anything that will make a shot more interesting and unusual.

6.  Learn the rule of thirds and other compositional fundamentals like leading lines, angles, foreground/background.

7.  Use a reflector: it's your best friend using available light. It fill in the shadows nicely.

8.  Use a tripod, if the shot is stationary. Use steadicam or slider to add motion.

9.  Audio/sound is more important than the image in your film.

10.  Plan for the worst case scenario. Anything that could go wrong, will.

11.  Be nice to people on the production team. Filmmaking can be stressful, but remember that you are all in the same boat.

12.  More to come / work in progress...
